SIALKOT, July 13: A two-year-long Crop Maximization Project (CMP) at Maallomahey village in Daska has completed at a cost of Rs2.8 million under the supervision of the National Agriculture Research Council, Islamabad. Sources told Dawn at Daska on Wednesday that after the completion of this project the wheat yield had increased to 43 maunds per acre from 26 maunds while basmati rice to 40 maunds per acre from 27 maunds in the area.

They said that experts from the NARC, Islamabad, had given the training of using modern farm machinery and quality seeds and pesticides to local farmers during the two-year project.

Besides, they said that 312 watercourses were improved with an expenditure of Rs24.64 million during the last year in the district.

They said a comprehensive programme to construct and improve around 392 watercourses, including 292 canal and 100 tubewell watercourses, would soon be launched in district’s rural areas.

The government had also purchased nine laser land-levellers with a sum of Rs9 million for ensuring the smooth provision of irrigation water to fields, including to farmers at tail-end.

SMASHED: Sialkot police smashed 33 inter-district gangs of dacoits and arrested their 122 members during the month of June.

The police also recovered a huge quantity of illicit weapons and stolen property worth Rs10 million from them during the period.

This was disclosed by Sialkot DPO Usama Mumtaz Raja while talking to reporters here on Wednesday.

The DPO said the police had also arrested 38 proclaimed offenders and 40 court absconders. While during the first six months of the current year, the police arrested 674 POs and 665 CAs.

He said the police had also recovered 0.354 kgs heroin, 56.381 kgs hashish, 140 bottles of liquor, unearthed six distilleries and arrested eight drunkards. Police also seized six Kalashnikovs, 26 rifles, 20 guns, 119 pistols, four carbines and 718 cartridges during the period.

He said that busted gangs of dacoits were wanted by Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujranwala, Lahore, Faisalabad and Rawalpindi police in several cases of dacoity, robbery, kidnap for ransom, theft and other heinous crimes.
