PESHAWAR: A large number of labourers working on the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project on Monday staged a protest near the Board Bazaar against non-payment of salaries.

The protesting labourers blocked the GT Road and chanted slogans against the provincial government for non-payment of their salaries. The workers wearing yellow helmets and carrying sticks also disrupted the traffic.

Sources told Dawn that a big amount of BRT contractor is pending as the Peshawar Development Authority, the project execution agency, is yet to clear bills for past several months. They said that the pending amount stood at Rs3.5 billion. They added that about Rs3.08 billion was pending for all the three reaches of the project.
