Boy in ‘protective custody’ for attempting to fly ‘flying machine’

SAHIWAL: Rang Shah police on Sunday took a youth into “protective custody” who was attempting to operate, what he called, a flying device he had created.
Police caught Fayaz, a matriculation student, who was about to ‘fly’ his device in the fields of village 50/EB, Muhammad Nagar of Arifwala. Fayaz claimed to have sold his four-kanal piece of land he had inherited and invested the money into developing a flying machine.
On Sunday, hundreds of villagers gathered as he was about to test the machine. However, someone informed Rang Shah police who cordoned off the fields and stopped Fayaz.

Witnesses said police carried the machine in a tractor trolley and took it to the police station along with Fayaz. No first information report was registered against him and the youth was in custody till the filing of this report.
Rang Shah Station House Officer Nisar Bhatti told Dawn that Fayaz had only been taken into protective custody and the unreliable machine impounded to ensure it did not cause any harm to villagers who had gathered to witness the experiment.
He said they had called in experts to check what the device was and how it would function.

Provincial Govt. should instead provide him assistance (education is provincial subject) in shape of qualified engineers who can supervise the tests. If there is any potential, the Govt. should fund his interests!

This is ridiculous. I am an engineer as well and trust me, it takes a lot of guts to create something, let alone fund it by selling your plot off. Go back 150 years. Toma Alva Edison was rusticated out of US trains as he was doing 'unsafe' experiments. Madam Curie and her family paid with their lives as they didn't themselves know about the safety of materials they were handling.
Go back 100 years. People complained to police that the electric rays Marconi transmitted were causing 'electric shocks' to people. It was later proved to be a psycho-paranoia.
Yet, humanity owes a lot to all these risk-takers.
The boy has sunk his money in the flying machine project. He should have been allowed, rather supported, to continue with his creativity.
Every society has a fair share of naysayers and it is the job of people in commanding positions to keep them under the check of logic.
There must be some institutions supporting the innovators in Pakistan and they must step in to set an example for other youth and spawn the much-needed culture of innovation in Pakistani society.

Guys, Good decision. I don't think anything will happen to the gentleman and if his invention is significant, I am sure he will be rewarded by the government or the private sector. For now, the safety concerns had to be taken care of - he wanted to make a test run, which with such objects have to be designed carefully taking all security measures. Imagine if there was a flaw in his design and it results in numerous deaths - all of us would be cursing the government and the police for not providing the necessary checks!

The boy should have asked his former school teachers, or local college physics teacher to organize the experiment. the proper application to conduct such a public display. One can not just go out and conduct potentially fatal experiment. It is also become a public risk when a crowd gathered without proper arrangement for security and fire extinguishing arrangements. For those who are referring Wright Brothers, their experiments were community organized events, even publicized. Look at the pictures closely and you could see fire engines, parked close by. Not just random dude going into an open field and risk his life and others.

Should have had Engineering University involved in it to make sure safety of the boy and the villagers during the event. Remember documentary "Boy Who Harnessed the Wind". Story of an African boy who created a wind mill using home made parts plus an alternator he bought from a junk yard. The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a remarkable true story about human inventiveness and its power to overcome crippling adversity. It inspired everyone who doubted the power of one individual's ability to change his community and better the lives of those around him.
This is like discouraging hands-on engineering. He sacrificed all his assets for his passion. Please encourage this young talent and give him a chance to prove his creativity.

The case could have been handled differently. Sure, safety concerns are legitimate but arresting was unnecessary. Take the "aircraft" to a proper airfield and let it be inspected by professionals. And take it from there. And if it was unsafe, provide him the opportunity to learn. It's not every day a "village boy" builds flying craft. I'm sure he has potential given the right tools and knowledge.

The CAA and other authorities needs to encourage the man who test flew his home built airplane and the boy who attempted to fly his "flying machine" These have creative minds and can be an asset to the country not a liability. Would there not be anyone who would give these two people a sponsorship to university to study this amazing thirst for developing Knowledge. Help them, guide them, they need to know the right processes and yes they have a thirst for good development. This is the way to uplift the community. Get the rural community out of its poverty. Don't suppress intelligence.
