KARACHI, July 5: The Inspector General of Police Sindh, Asad Jehangir Khan, has directed the DIG Traffic Karachi to prepare a rain emergency traffic plan in advance, so that vehicular flow could be kept uninterrupted during rains. He was presiding over a meeting regarding ‘Revamping of the Traffic System’, at his office on Tuesday.

Mr Jehangir said all such points should be identified where rain water accumulates, and the city government may be requested to provide one or more pumping systems to pump out water from main roads.

He also directed adopting measures to retrieve stranded vehicles from roads, besides chalking out a traffic diversion plan for citizens in case of traffic jams during rains.

He stressed the police officers to help redress problems of the public related to traffic jams with the help of traffic police personnel.

The IG Sindh was apprised of the ongoing traffic campaign at Sharea Faisal, which has been declared as a model road. Some 500 traffic police personnel have been deputed on the road to ensure smooth traffic.

The IGP also directed the DIG Traffic to prepare a strategy for avoiding traffic jams on Sharea Faisal well in advance before the reopening of schools after vacations.

The DIG Traffic was asked to discuss the issue with parents and school administrations before finalizing any strategy. The CPLC should also be consulted in preparing the strategy, the IGP added.

The CPLC chief proposed starting an information campaign for the benefit of the general people through a local radio channel.—PPI
