SUKKUR: A jirga [tribal court] held in Arsala Bijarani village near Tangwani town of Kandhkot-Kashmore district on Sunday ordered a man to pay a fine/compensation of Rs1.5 million for strangling his 18-year-old niece to death on the charges of maintaining an extramarital affair a couple of months back.

Shabbiran Chachar was killed by her uncle, Abdul Rahim Chachar, under the notorious custom of karo-kari. The matter was brought to the jirga, which was presided over the community elders, Manzoor Ahmed Chachar and Arz Mohammad Chachar.

After hearing the rival sides, the jirga declared Rahim guilty of murder of the innocent woman and ordered him to pay a compensation of Rs1.5 million to the aggrieved side. He paid Rs100,000 on the spot and undertook to pay off the remaining amount in instalments within the next three months.

Both sides accepted the ruling and declared an end to their enmity.
