KARACHI: A councillor belonging to the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan was killed and another person injured in an armed attack on a union council in the New Karachi area on Monday night, according to police and hospital officials.

The UC-6 chairman and other persons were present in a “reconciliation committee” when six men on motorbikes opened indiscriminate fire on them and fled, New Karachi DSP Irshad Ali Bhutto said, adding that the attackers were armed with Kalashnikovs and pistols.

Councillor Shakeel, 40, and UC employee Azam Zahoor, 60, were injured in the attack and taken to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

Additional police surgeon Dr Saleem Shaikh said Shakeel later died during treatment. The MQM-P councillor sustained three bullet wounds on different parts of his body.

Dr Shaikh added that the condition of Azam was serious as he received a bullet wound on his chest.
