KARACHI: A union council chairman on Wednesday evening gunned down a suspected robber who had allegedly tried to loot him in the Shah Latif Town police limits.

Area SHO Gul Beg said that two unknown suspects tried to snatch cash from Raheem Shah, chairman of Bhains Colony, at Babar Kanta near Murtaza Chowrangi in Landhi.

However, the UC chairman took out his pistol and due to his “quick, effective and brave response”, one suspect was injured critically while his accomplice escaped from the scene without any loot.

The wounded suspect was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Colony, where he died during treatment. His identity could not be ascertained immediately.

The police claimed to have recovered a 9mm pistol with eight rounds from the custody of the deceased.

Gang busted

Police on Wednesday claimed to have busted a gang of street criminals, which was also involved in kidnappings and murders.

Acting on tip-off, Sharea Faisal police detained two suspects, Saif alias Kala and Niaz alias Niazoo from Drigh Road and recovered pistols, five snatched mobile phones and cash from their possession.

“They are habitual criminals involved in dozens of cases of street crimes, murders, kidnappings and encounters with the police,” claimed SSP East, Azfar Mahesar.
