DACCA: One student was killed and three others injured, two seriously, when the Police opened fire on student demonstrators near the Post-Graduate Medical Institute here today [Jan 20]. The victim, Asaduzzaman, a law student who received bullet injury on his chest, died at the Dacca Medical College Hospital.

Several policemen also received injury as a result of brickbatting by the students. Four Policemen have been admitted into Medical College Hospital of whom the condition of three was stated to be serious. A staff photographer Mozammel Haq of a local English daily, “Pakistan Observer”, also received injury on his head. In all at least 35 people were treated in the hospital of whom nine have been admitted.

Dacca students today observed strike in protest against what they called the “East Pakistan Rifles and the Police excesses” during the past three days. For about two hours the students armed with iron sticks, lathis and hockey sticks, clashed with the Police. The students showered brickbats on the Police who fired teargas shells. The Police also resorted to lathi-charge and at last opened fire.
