KARACHI: A man died when his head got stuck in an automatic door of a five-star hotel along the PIDC intersection on Thursday, police and hospital officials said.

Saddar SP Abdullah Ahmed told Dawn that the head of 28-year-old Sirajuddin was stuck in an automatic door of the Movenpick Hotel.

Initial probe revealed that someone pushed the button of the door and as Sirajuddin tried to walk through it, his head was stuck. He sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre by an Edhi ambulance where he died during treatment.

Dr Seemin Jamali, executive director of the JPMC, said that the man received critical injuries on his head and face. He was in critical condition when brought to the hospital and died during treatment.

The man worked as an ice supplier at the hotel. He originally hailed from Pishin, Balochistan.

South SSP Pir Mohammed Shah told Dawn that so far no one had approached the police to pursue the case legally. However, the officer added that he had directed the Saddar SP to personally look into the matter and if the family wanted, an FIR would be registered.

The officer said that the man who accompanied the victim took his body to Pishin for burial.

Hotel’s stance

A senior official of the hotel said that it was purely “an unfortunate incident” but still the hotel management was fully cooperating with the police investigators and the family of the victim.

“Immediately after the incident, we moved him to the hospital and our staff was with him all the way,” he said. “We also reported the incident to the police, who recorded statements of our staff members, eyewitnesses and collected all available evidence. We extremely feel sorry for the [loss of] life of the person who was a regular visitor to our hotel. We have made our availability very clear to the family of the deceased and police at any point of time for our cooperation.”
