KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Tuesday remanded a suspect in police custody till Jan 17 in a case pertaining to the killing of a man in the presence of policemen.

Police have arrested suspect Sohail Mughal for allegedly killing 37-year-old Munawwar Ali in the presence of policemen on Jan 13 within the remit of the New Town police station.

The investigating officer produced the suspect before Judicial Magistrate (East) Shoaib Ilahi for his remand.

The IO informed the magistrate that the detained suspect had filed a petition for the recovery of his estranged “wife” and three daughters from the custody of Munawwar Ali with whom they were living in a flat in New Town.

He mentioned that the suspect along with Inspector Raja Tanveer and his subordinates, Nazeer Ahmed, Ghulam Mohammad and Khan Mohammad, of the Darakhshan police station had gone to the flat of Ali to arrest him and to recover the petitioner’s wife and his three daughters on the order of a court.

The IO stated that upon seeing Ali the suspect pulled out a pistol and fired at him. Ali sustained two bullets in the upper torso and was rushed to a hospital, where he died.

He asked the magistrate to remand the suspect in his custody for further interrogation and to complete the investigation and other legal formalities.

Allowing the request, the court remanded the suspect in police custody for three days, directing the IO to produce him on the next date along with an investigation report.
