GB grievances

Published December 31, 2018

THIS refers to the article ‘A constitutional black hole’ (Dec 21). All freedom struggles have been successful either by use of force or by vote. The people of Gilgit-Baltistan revolted against the repressive regime in November 1947.

Their plea for accession to Pakistan remains in abeyance for one reason or the other. Some ad hoc arrangements made by various governments do not appear to satisfy the local populace.

Gilgit-Baltistan historically and culturally has been a separate entity. This area has remained under the direct control of the federal government compared to Azad Jammu and Kashmir which have enjoyed a semi-autonomous status.

Owing to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, the region has acquired additional importance. Apprehensions expressed by the writer need to be addressed. There is a need to allow representation of both GB and AJK in the National Assembly even on a provisional basis if some legal implication is anticipated.

One hundred days is too small a period to judge the performance of any government. One can hope the present government will take appropriate steps to redress the grievances of the GB people in the coming months on a priority basis.
