HYDERABAD, Jan 11: A large number of the residents of New Wahdat Colony, Qasimabad, here on Friday staged a demonstration and blocked the National Highway for one hour in protest against the collapse of roads and drainage network in the area.
Led by Kazi Abdus Sattar and other notables of the area, the protesters raised slogans against the Hyderabad Development Authority and the district coordination officer.
They said that the roads in union council 1 and 2, Qasimabad, had turned into potholes and the sewerage system had totally collapsed.
They said that they had called on the DCO who had promised to visit the area on Saturday last but he did not turn up. They added that they had also approached the relevant authorities a number of times and the newspapers had also carried stories underlining the problems of the locality but the authorities had remained totally indifferent.
They said that tenders had been invited for the development of the city but no tender had been invited for Qasimabad.
They said that 15 huge residential complexes and settlements fell in union council 1 and 2, Qasimabad, but the area had been totally neglected.
A heavy contingent of police and the Nazim and Naib Nazim of Qasimabad tehsil, Noor Mohammad Shoro and Rafi Abbasi, rushed to the spot and persuaded the people to call off the protest.
The Nazims assured the people of leading a protest demonstration in future if the sewerage system was not improved and the roads were not constructed.
ADMISSIONS: The director admissions, University of Sindh, here on Thursday has announced the first list of candidates provisionally selected for admissions on merit for B.A., part-I, and Fine Arts for the academic session, 2002.
The list of the candidates has been displayed at the notice boards of the Sindh University Model School (old campus), Hyderabad, and the Sindh University administration building, Jamshoro.
The interested candidates can also check the list on the university website, www.usindh.edu.pk
The candidates have been advised to pay their admission fee through challan at the Habib Bank Limited, Sindh University branch, Jamshoro, up to Jan 15.
INTERNET CHARGES: Dr Abdul Rehman Memon, Vice Chancellor, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology, Jamshoro, during his visit to the Internet centre at the central library of the university here on Thursday has announced reduction in the Internet charges from Rs35 to Rs15 per hour for students, employees, faculty, officers and staff of the campus.
The vice chancellor said that modern facilities would be provided to the students at the university so that they could develop their skills and meet the challenges of the new century.
