KARACHI, June 24: A consultative workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) for educators and communicators working for environmental conservation was held under the auspices of the IUCN, The World Conservation Union.
The workshop was held to promote the ESD concept among educators and to consult them on launching the DESD in Pakistan as highlighted by Hasan Rizvi, head of the Education, Communication and Knowledge Management Prog-ramme, IUCN - Pakistan.
A presentation was made by Zohra Rehmat Ali, Coordinator Environmental Education Programme, IUCN-P on the ESD and some proposed initiatives of the IUCN-P.
The IUCN’s plan was also endorsed to hold a high profile event for policymakers to launch the DESD in collaboration with the UNESCO in 2005.
A workshop focussing on specific themes to explore the ESD’s connection with sectors such as formal and informal education, private sector, media, religious education, sustainable livelihoods and governance was also emphasised to develop key recommendations.
Experts from the Institute for Educational Development, Institute for Teacher Education Sindh, Indus Resource Centre, the American Consulate and various newspapers also attended the workshop.—APP
