KARACHI: Police on Wednesday registered a case against a man for attempting suicide as he climbed up an electric pole in Korangi in protest against alleged “undesirable” attitude of police towards him.

Awami Colony police booked Mohammed Shakir under Sections 325 (attempted suicide) and 511 (punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or for shorter terms) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Area SHO Shahid Khan said that the case was registered on behalf of the state and the suspect had been arrested.

Shakir on Wednesday afternoon climbed up the pole of a high-tension wire passing through Korangi.

The police after receiving information about the incident approached K-Electric officials who suspended power supple to the locality to save his life.

The police officers who reached the spot tried to persuade the man to come down but to no avail.

The fire brigade sent a snorkel through which the man was brought down, said an official of the fire brigade, adding that he did not receive any injuries.

The area SHO claimed that the man was suffering from “depression”.

However, witnesses said that Shakir was an alleged drug addict and worked in a factory and was protesting against the police over subjecting him to “undesirable” attitude as recently drugs were found in his possession.

The man also made demand for marrying someone, the witnesses said.
