A husband and wife were gunned down, while their daughter received injuries as three armed men stormed into a house in Sohrab Goth area of Karachi on Sunday evening and opened indiscriminate fire, police said.

The incident took place in Lasi Goth are which falls under the jurisdiction of Sohrab Goth police station.

According to Additional Police Surgeon Dr Saleem Shaikh, the husband, Zamir Ahmed Shaikh, 45, and his wife, Bhagul Bibi, were rushed to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital along with their injured daughter where the couple was pronounced dead on arrival.

Their daughter, Soomal, in her early 20s was admitted for treatment and is out of danger, added Dr Shaikh.

Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur said the couple had an old feud with the three suspects from when they lived in their native town of Naudero in Larkana district.

"The double murder is the outcome of some personal enmity," said the SSP.

He said police were probing the incident further and the culprits will be arrested soon.

Five perish in road accidents

Five youngsters died in separate road accidents in Surjani, Superhighway, and Seaview areas of the metropolis on Sunday, according to police.

In Surjani, two young boys were riding a motorbike when a dumper hit them near Abdullah Mor. They sustained critical injuries and were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital where doctors pronounced them dead. The deceased were identified as Harmain Asif, 14, and Awais, 10.

Separately on Superhighway, a teenager and a man died while five others were injured, when a car and truck collided near Nooriabad, according to Edhi Foundation's spokesperson.

The deceased man was identified as Niaz Bakhsh and the teenager, Sahil. Among the injured were three women.

In another incident in the evening, an underage car driver killed two youths at Seaview, according to Sahil police.

They added that Aslam and Abdul Basit were riding a motorbike when ostensibly an over-speeding car hit them near Village Restaurant. They sustained critical injuries and died on the spot.

The police arrested the driver and seized the car.

Sahil police officer Hamraz said that the errant driver — who is a student aged 17 — was driving without a licence.

Three persons die, seven become disabled due to accidents daily

Karachi police chief Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh said that three persons die, while seven persons lose their legs or hands due to accidents in the city on a daily basis. He cited over-speeding, violation of one-way traffic, and lack of use of indicators while driving as three major reasons behind growing incidents of deaths on the roads.

Citing a report during a programme held to remember the people killed in fatal accidents, AIG Shaikh said around 1,200 accidents occurred in Karachi every month.

He disclosed that around 61,000 people were fined over charges of driving on the wrong side of the road during a recent campaign conducted by traffic police in the city.

The city police chief also revealed that around 60 per cent drivers have no licence in Karachi. He said obtaining a licence was imperative and the citizens must demonstrate this responsibility, adding that driving without a licence was a "crime".

He also urged bike-riders to wear helmets. The AIG said most of the deceased in such accidents were youths and said that such deaths could be avoided by following the traffic laws.

Citing a report by the World Health Organisation, the city police chief said that more people die in road accidents than terrorism-related incidents in the world.
