Sarfraz should be named skipper till 2019 World Cup: Misbah

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain and newly-appointed PCB cricket committee member Misbah-ul-Haq on Monday said Sarfraz Ahmed should be named skipper until next year’s World Cup.

Talking to reporters here in Karachi, Misbah said: “Sarfraz is improving as captain with each passing day and has been leading the side very well. All this talk of the captaincy being a burden on him or him facing problems with three formats is absurd. I am very much sure that he will be do a great job in the World Cup too.”

It may be mentioned here that PCB chairman Ehsan Mani, in his recent talk with the media, said the Board has not yet decided about the captain for the World Cup, slated to be held in England in June, while former opener Mohsin Khan also advised Sarfraz to concentrate on one format as captain.

Responding to a question, Misbah said: “I think every team and player experience a bad patch in their career and Asia Cup was that bad patch for Pakistan. I know that that the players would learn from their mistakes and overcome them to excel in all formats from here on.

“I think this is the right time to announce Sarfraz as captain because we don’t have much time left for the World Cup.”

Things will change after SA tour, AUS Tour , Eng tour before world cup..thats why he suggest to announce Sarfraz as captain now... His batting is big 0.

Thank you Misbah. Please explain this to Mohsin as well and ask them to discuss things internally instead of showing-off in media and unnecessary putting the team and captain under pressure.

I agree with Misbah. It will be interesting to see how this very odd cricket committee functions. If Mohsin does not behave, Misbah and even Wasim May resign.

Everyone has unanimously called out Mohsin Khan for his comment but why is nobody questioning Ehsan Mani who came up with the ridiculous ideas of forming a cricket committee with no powers and a vague agenda and then including two highly controversial members in that committee while sweeping the Justice Qayuum report under the carpet. And why is Ehsan Mani delaying the official announcement regarding World Cup captaincy? Mani was supposed to be considerably better than Sethi but so far, his performance has been poor to say the least.

I was not aware of the fact that there needs to be an announcement of the world cup cricket captain for 2019. Isn't the current captain the assumed captain unless they announce otherwise. I would say Misbah bhai is close enough and having Sarfraz in his team when he was leading to give valuable feedback on Sarfraz's capacity and skill set to lead the pakistan team. The one thing I would not agree with is Sarfraz being the test captain, I think someone else should be given an opportunity to lead. Maybe Asad Shafiq.

@Razzak: If Sarfraz promote himself to open the inning, he would not only make more runs, but it would become obvious that he is better than most Pakistani so-called players who bat only as Batsman. Actually, in present team, Pakistan do not have any batsman better than Sarfraz in Test, but he is also one of the most reliable batsman for ODI or T20I.
