ISLAMABAD: Former senator Enver Baig said on Saturday that he would move an application before the Supreme Court to explain that a property shown by the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) under his wife’s name has already been declared in her annual tax returns filed in the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) for the year 2015-16.
A report furnished before the Supreme Court by the FIA included a list of 44 politically exposed individuals or their benamidars who possessed properties in the UAE.
The list is part of the annexure submitted before a three-judge SC bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar that was hearing the case relating to illegal transfer of money from Pakistan to foreign countries.
The list contains the name of Ayesha Enver Baig, wife of Mr Baig.
Mr Baig told Dawn on Saturday that his counsel would move the application before the apex court on Monday.
In a statement, the former senator claimed the UAE property was gifted to his wife by her late father and that it had already been declared and acknowledged by the FIA in its report.
He denied that neither his wife nor children had any share in the business by the name of Anwar Steel in Pakistan or abroad. He also said there was no property in his name outside the country.
Meanwhile, Akbar Khan — the brother of former ministers Humayun Akhtar and Haroon Akhtar — has denied that he owned any property in the UAE.
Mr Khan’s name is also included in the FIA’s report.
In a statement, he termed the claim about his properties in the UAE incorrect, fabricated and false.
The FIA report claimed that Mr Khan possessed six properties in the UAE and that he had not provided any affidavit despite repeated notices were sent to him.
