ISLAMABAD: A superintendent of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police disappeared in Islamabad on Saturday, the capital police said.

Tahir Khan was posted as SP Rural in Peshawar. On Friday, he reached his house in G-10 on leave.

The police said Mr Khan left for a walk on Saturday and did not return home.

According to an official of the capital police, the SP’s wife received a message from his mobile phone in the evening which said: “I am safe and sound and in Sara-i-Alamgir and will return later.”

The message further asked her not to panic if the phone “is found off due to weak signal in the area”.

The official said: “We believe that the SP himself had sent the message.” But so far neither a formal complaint has been lodged with the police nor anyone has approached the police to inform it about the disappearance of the SP. The official said the police got information about the disappearance of the officer from a third person and later confirmed it from the family.

Teams have been constituted to trace the whereabouts of the SP. One of the teams is examining the CCTV footage of the Safe City Project and others are getting technical help and collecting more details.

The whereabouts of the SP were traced till F-10 from where he disappeared, the official said.

The Peshawar police were approached and informed about the SP’s disappearance. Details about the professional and personal life of the officer were being collected from the Peshawar police.

There were reports that the SP was under threat from militant outfits, the official added. Besides, one of his relatives was killed in Malpur (Islamabad) last year over an enmity and the issue was later settled on a compromise.

The issue lies not in the sincerity and dedication of Pakistan’s law enforcement but in their capacity and access to effective surveillance equipment.
