Supply from Simly Dam cut by 4MGD

ISLAMABAD, Jan 10: Capital Development Authority (CDA) on Thursday reduced water supply to Islamabad from Simly Dam by four million gallons per day (MGD), a senior Authority official told Dawn.

He said the step was taken because the dam’s water level haddeclined, and the Authority wanted to utilize the present stock till the monsoon season.

The water level at the reservoir recorded on Thursday was 2273.9 feet, against its normal level of 2295 feet, showing a drop by four feet within a week.

The official said lack of rains was the main reason of sudden decline of the dam’s water level. He said a total of 61 MGD water was being supplied to the city, and it could be cut down to 35 MGD, if there were no rains till the mid of next month.

At present, some 19 MGD water is being supplied from Simly Dam, and if the dry spell persists, the supply can be squeezed down to 15 MGD or more, he said.

The current supply of water from all 180 tubewells in the federal capital is stated to be 23 MGD, which is likely to be reduced by 10 MGD. — Our Reporter
