THE United Nations (Algiers radio) said today [Oct 15] that the Allies have made a successful landing north of the river Volturno. Several bridgeheads have been established. An American broadcast from Algiers late this afternoon said: “The Fifth Army has driven its bridgeheads 5 miles beyond Volturno.”

The Algiers radio (Radio France) after announcing semi-official reports of the capture of Vinchiaturo says that the Germans, fearing further Allied landings, have ordered the evacuation of the whole west coast of Italy northwards from the mouth of the Tiber. “The real battle for Rome has begun. Allied columns are converging on Rome from the west and from the south.”

[Meanwhile, as reported from Washington,] The War Production Board announces that Government war expenditure in September amounted to 7,212 million dollars which represents a decrease of four per cent from August.

Canberra Senator R.V. Keane, Australian Trade and Customs Minister, stated in the Senate that the value of goods and services sent by the United States to Australia under lend-lease to the end of June was 552 million dollars. — Dawn Delhi
