KARACHI, June 15: Tension gripped some old city areas here on Wednesday in the aftermath of a gun fight between the youths of Muttahida Quami Movement and Sunni Tehrik, which took place on Tuesday. Shops and markets remained closed in Bohrapir, Ranchhor Line, Chuna Bhatti, and other areas. Due to the tense environment, commercial activities at these markets remained suspended. Public transport was also thin while the private vehicles were seen plying on roads in the area.

Heavy deployment of law enforcement agencies were made to maintain law and order. The police mobile vans kept on patrolling the troubled area to keep an eye on unscrupulous elements.

Four people including three activists of Muttahida Quami Movement had been injured during a heavy exchange of fire between the activists of Sunni Tehrik and Muttahida Quami Movement in Ranchhor Line on Tuesday. Following the clash, an office of the Sunni Tehrik was ransacked and three vehicles were torched.

Earlier in the morning, police surrounded the head office of Sunni Tehrik in Chuna Bhatti, and arrested a leader of the organization, identified as Asif Dhaga.

A senior police officer said that three people of the organization had been wanted in the firing case and the police had arrested one of them for his alleged involvement in injuring four people. Two other suspects were absconding and the police had been conducting raids at different places to locate them.

As the police surrounded the Sunni Tehrik head office on early Wednesday morning, the area residents said that the sound of firing around the head office echoed the neighbourhood.
