LAHORE, June 14: Opposition members walked out of the house on Tuesday to protest alleged victimization at the hands of government agencies. As the session started 35 minutes late on Tuesday afternoon, opposition leader Qasim Zia immediately after recitation of the Holy Quran said on a point of order that the police had taken into custody the Kharian tehsil nazim belonging to the PPP from Gujranwala court premises.

The victim had been shifted to some unidentified place, he said and warned the government that the chief minister would be held responsible if any harm was done to the nazim. He alleged that the Gujranwala DIG was behind this act.

Mr Nadeem Kaira had reached the Gujranwala sessions court to get his bail confirmed in some corruption cases when two DSPs reportedly arrested him and shifted him to some unknown place.

Condemning the police act, Mr Zia along with all opposition MPAs walked out of the house.

As apparently the PML-N and the MMA members had not been taken into confidence, they were reluctant to join the PPP MPAs in the walkout. However, Rana Sanaullah of the PML-N convinced them to follow suit.

The chair, being held by Deputy Speaker Sardar Shaukat Husain Mazari at that time, requested two ministers — Rana Qasim Noon and Husain Jehanian Gardezi — to reconcile and bring back the opposition MPAs.

Law Minister Raja Basharat assured the house that he would personally contact the Gujranwala DIG and inform the house facts of the incident within an hour.

However, the minister could not submit his reply even by 8pm.

On a privilege motion moved by PML-N MPA Dr Nazir Mithu Dogar against a Vehari ASP, the minister sought that it should be pending so that he could get views of the police department on it.

Dr Dogar had alleged that ASP Sarfaraz Falki had arrested and tortured him just before the last assembly session.

When the police were asked about justification for the arrest and the torture they further started persecuting him, he added.

The medico-legal certificate issued by the Vehari DHQ Hospital confirmed the torture, he said.
