KARACHI: Newly appointed Inspector General of Police Dr Syed Kaleem Imam on Wednesday assumed the charge as the 59th police chief of Sindh.

Speaking to police officers at the Central Police Office here, he said that upholding merit and competence as well as ensuring efficient policing with a better attitude towards the people would be his first priority.

He also showed a strong resolve for fighting against crimes and announced that the police would work without any fear or favour.

He said the “martyrs” of the Sindh police were role models and their families were his responsibility. “I strongly believe in the principles of justice and fairplay in all policing functions,” he added.

The IGP said that serving the community without fear and favour and assistance to other law enforcement agencies in providing a peaceful environment to the citizens of the province had been the distinctive feature of the police’s commitment.

He said that in order to overcome the upcoming challenges, his priorities would be “to sustain the prevailing best practices and to continuously improve the procedures to meet the emerging challenges”.

Besides, the police would work to proactively contemplate new initiatives by synthesizing workforce-centric proposals and not the least refining working environment, functional efficiency, organisational structure, human resource development and optimum utilisation of the assets.

He pointed out that the motive of the police was to serve the people and fight against crimes with resolve.

He opined that the policing was a team work and no individual can achieve targets.

IG Imam said that the masses tended to approach the police for redressing of their grievances on a daily basis and it was the responsibility of the police to solve their problems on time in an impartial manner.

Besides improving the police performance, the officers should treat the people with good manners, he added.

The Sindh police chief declared that doors of his office would be open to seek suggestion and hold consultations for improving the policing process.

Declaring that merit and competence would be his priority, he asked the officers to ensure a better attitude towards the public.

The IG also asked the officers to take such steps which tended to raise the morale of the force.
