Shah Faisal Colony

THE road access facility to one of the oldest localities of Karachi known as Drigh Road Cantonment Bazar area has become difficult after the construction of flyovers and underpasses on main Sharea Faisal.

This locality was first developed during World War II to billet Allied troops transiting to and from the different war fronts. After the creation of Pakistan, the Pakistan Air Force set up a major air base which still exists. What was once a serene and peaceful suburb has become a heavily populated locality with the passage of time.

Now that Sharea Faisal is a signal-free thoroughfare, access to the area was blocked with concrete slabs and the residents coming from Saddar are left with no alternative except to make a U-turn from Star Gate, which is about five kilometres and takes at least 20 minutes because of traffic congestion.

Access to their area was provided to the residents of PIA Township located along one track which was a great relief for residents. However, this courtesy was short-lived and it was soon closed and a wall was erected to close the access.

The residents, especially rickshaw drivers and motorcyclists avoid the longer journey and U-turn by driving against traffic on the down track from Drigh Road railway station. This has led to many an accident. Furthermore, the vehicles of emergency services like ambulances and fire fighting vehicles also have no choice except violate traffic laws.

The city government and provincial authorities should resolve this issue on an immediate basis.
