KARACHI: King Hussein and his royal consort, Princess Muna Al-Hussein, were given a joyous and enthusiastic welcome when they reached Karachi from Amman last evening [Aug 27] for the wedding of Crown Prince Hassan bin Talal with Princess Sarvath Ikramullah today.

President Mohammad Ayub Khan, who had reached here from Rawalpindi earlier in the day, received the Jordanian King at the airport. Also to receive the royal visitors were some 20,000 people who had jam-packed every little inch of space of the airport building and outside on the roads up to the Star Gate. As the special Caravelle of the Royal Jordanian Airlines taxied down to a halt at 6.07 p.m. the huge crowd burst into cheers. The cheers were the loudest when the people saw the young monarch piloting the plane and waving to the welcome crowd from the cockpit after the plane had made the landing. — Correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency at the United Nations,] Jordan yesterday [Aug 26] urged the UN Security Council to “meet and take more effective measures to check Israeli aggression”. Israel has made fresh repeated military provocations against Jordan in the past few days by attacking its northern border areas with mortars.
