Wireless system hits snags in NAs

Published January 10, 2002

GILGIT, Jan 9: The wireless project launched by the Special Communication Organization (SCO) in Northern Areas has reportedly hit snags as its subscribers failed to establish communications through this system.

The SCO introduced wireless local loop (WLL) primarily for the border areas where it was difficult to connect the areas by telephone wire.

The WLL was initiated by erecting towers at various sites to link the areas to the main communication system.

Subscribers said that the telephone sets required electricity for operating but it was not available in the remote areas. They said they experienced noise and voice distortions during rains and inclement weather.

A source said that the WLL was a Chinese technology that had been launched in the Northern Areas without testing and its faults could not be removed due to lack of technical staff in the SCO.
