A recent survey carried out by Thomson Reuters Foundation has mentioned India as the world's most dangerous country for women due to the high risk of sexual violence.
The survey comprising 550 experts on women's issues has cited widespread sexual violence, retrograde cultural practices, and trafficking, as the reasons behind India becoming the world's most dangerous country for women.
War-torn Afghanistan and Syria ranked second and third, while Pakistan ranks sixth on the list behind Somalia and Saudia Arabia.
Between March 26 and May 04, the Thomson Reuters Foundation surveyed 548 experts on women’s issues across the globe, including academics, health workers, policy-makers, and NGO workers.
The respondents were asked to consider the following parameters: health care, cultural traditions, discrimination, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, and human trafficking. And India came up as the worst of the lot in half of them.
According to NDTV, Indian government’s data shows reported cases of crime against women rose by 83 per cent between 2007 and 2016, when there were four cases of rape reported every hour.
The poll was a repeat of a survey in 2011 that found experts saw Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Pakistan, India, and Somalia as the most dangerous countries for women.

It is shameful but realistic. The regressive mindsets, poverty, huge social imbalance among many other aspects contribute to this inequality.
I'm an Indian and agree that it is not really safe for women in India. First step to any reform is to accept. Only then any change can happen.
We have the same regressive mindsets about religion and sports sadly. But we carry way too much ego to even admit.

National Commission for Women rejects survey that ranked India as world's most dangerous country for women
548 experts on women’s issues were asked questions relating to risks faced by women in six areas including healthcare, access to economic resources and discrimination, customary practices, sexual violence, nonsexual violence, and human trafficking. 43 of these 548 experts are from India.

Historically Indian culture has been violent to women. The cruel tradition of "Satti" where a widow was forced to jump into flames while her husband was being cremated. Thanks to British Raj which stopped this heinous crime against women.

Too bad and too sad. However, the Govt. is not stopping to publish these reports and movements against sexual violence is growing stronger all over in India. Every news paper is publishing the incidence of violence and people are protesting against. Women activists are also working hard on the issue. Thus, there is a slim hope for a better future.

Having an opportunity to study the historic facts, and books written by authors on sub- continent by western writers, it is felt that surveys are imaginary and not in reality the correct image of facts. Before believing that India is most dangerous country for women, just consider its area,and huge population. Rare and spotted incidents are projected with hype by modern media in high proportions repeatedly. India on the contrary is most safe & respectful nation for women, ofcourse if you see its population proportionately the crime graph is much low when you compare with any of its neighbors. Both in India & Pak general attitude towards women is respectful except some rare spotted incidents which occur in far flung villages, or areas not fully under government writ. Women of India & Pak already working together for more rights & empowerments, and many NGOs are in unison. The TRF survey is nothing but imaginary and speculative. East has its own morals & values for women much better.

Even if this report is not completely correct, even if we are a few ranks below, does not matter. We Indians are ashamed of this, and we need to do a lot of cleaning in our minds and social structure to wash off this black spot. This will take time and a lot of effort but we will have to do it no matter the cost or opposition.

Let's admit that we have not created safe India for women as admission of WRONG is the first step in correction.
We will ensure to correct ourselves as early as we can.
Steps.
1. Equal opportunity to women including property rights.
2. CCTV camera's in all public places.
3. Respect women -- educate from school itself.
4. No sex testing before birth.
5. Adopting practice of putting mother's name as middle name instead of father's name.

The figure must surely be right but, here some how no one agrees.There are many rape cases which is not at all reported.
I was working as "Country Security Head" for Lafarge and inspite of my regularly pointing out our lack of safety and security blocks for children in cement plants. I was told by the CEO that Lafarge is not responsible for the safety of children. In March 2014 two young girls (age 10-11) were raped and inspite of the medical report and the accused accepting his guilt he, was quietly told to resign (The company did not report the incident to the police). I was told that the girls parents do not want to report this incident for family honor.
The police came to know the incident but as it is India hence, they were managed and instead of Rape, molestation case was lodged. (As per procedure the case was not investigated by a lady police inspector and or a lady MBBS doctor)
As I was the only team member opposing this, I was told to leave and was told that "Rapes keep on happening in India but, for Lafarge business is more important than rapes"
The incident was also reported to the Global HQ but, they kept mum.
I still have documentary proof of the same
