WASHINGTON: In his first public appearance on Saturday night, Pakistan’s new US ambassador Ali Jahangir Siddiqui urged all members of the Pakistani community living in the United States to participate in the country’s revival and re-emergence.
Mr Siddiqui, who presented his credentials to US President Donald Trump on Friday, said he was aware of the current status of the US-Pakistan relationship but he did not believe in conducting diplomacy through the media.
“Everyone needs to participate in Pakistan’s revival and re-emergence and we are well on our way towards it,” said Mr Siddiqui while telling the audience how a Latin American country, Colombia, faced the same challenges that Pakistan does but overcame them to become the region’s fourth largest economy.
Mr Siddiqui urged the Pakistani community to play its role in rebuilding Pakistan, instead of wasting their time in negative talk about their homeland.
“Work with us in order to get Pakistan back to where it once was,” he said, explaining how Pakistan was once seen as a strong emerging economy.
Sajid Tarar, a Republican politician of Pakistani origin who hosted the event, assured the ambassador of the community’s support in rebuilding the US-Pakistan relationship.
“The relationship is passing through a bad patch but if we work hard, we can put it back on the right track,” Mr Tarar said.
Mr Siddiqui was named the ambassador to the US on May 8, reached Washington on May 29, and presented his credentials on June 22.

I realised the other day that patriotic words are often used in poor and corrupt countries. Patriotism is important but I would like our leaders to talk about economy, projects and legislation.

Words mean nothing. Stop giving emotional speeches like your predecessors have done and fix the system on the ground.
Establish free market economy with no government interference, elimate corruption, rationalize tax structure and reform the judicial system for timely and inexpensive justice for legal protection of investors. And by the way, as first step stop calling dual Pakistani origin citizens as traitors and ensure all rights and privileges to them so they feel comfortable in their mother land. Follow the Chinese model in which China welcomed American Chinese with open arms who brought the know how and their network to develop the Chinese economy. The Chinese from Hong Kong and Taiwan brought in the money. Take wise steps and do not waste time and resources on rehtoric which shall not deliver the results

People are happy to contribute but the mess at the ground level needs cleaning up first. The press is littered with corruption from top to bottom, until the trust is restored.
My friend's son visited Pakistan first time in his teens and said never again, appalled by lack of facilities in city like Karachi. Enough to say people need to be sincere before looking for help from outside.

A country where only 2 percent pay taxes , where corrupted leaders get elected again and again and loot and plunder millions of dollars and send it LOOTED MONEY in Swiss banks and have zero accountability.. a country where foreign reserves are mismanaged and debt has increased to unpropotinate levels.. can never be on revival? Overseas Pakistan will never pay a dime.

RSS leadership on the record, multiple times since 2014, has advocated nuclear attack on Pakistan and break it in 4 pieces. The threats are on youtube for every one to watch. We cant sit back and watch while we have an existential threat from RSS leadership.

@shail Yes, absolutely, Shail. Not a single ambassador to the United States has ever been successful in building a good working relationship with either influential Republicans or Democrats. For one reason, they lack political & diplomatic "foresight" and second, they are not able to articulate the vision of Pakistan properly. Simply meeting Pakistani-Americans or Pakistani-Canadians will not get them the main media platform, or attending religious or non-religious functions at the local community centres or the homes of Pakistanis living abroad. They need to educate themselves to worldly happenings, and then be shrewd enough to use every opportunity to promote Pakistan in a professional manner. This entails more socializing with Americans, more participation with Americans, and American officials and or lobbyists, just as Israel & India does on continuous basis.

Given his familiarity with the United States, his experience, his age, his energy and his education at an IVY league American university, Ali Jahangir Siddiqui is a great choice for the ambassadorial job in Washington DC. He will prove himself to be way more effective than any career foreign service officer or a retired Army General. However, things on ground in Pakistan will need to change for the better for Mr. Siddiqui to gain the credibility which he shall need
