PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority on Friday disposed of 8,000 litres of formalin-mixed milk in various areas of the provincial capital.

According to a statement, the action was taken on the complaints received from citizens that in most parts of the Peshawar district the milk was not pure. The complainants had also identified the milk supply outlets meant to be tested for chemicals and other adulteration.

Over 50 shops were tested for chemicals and resultantly 8,000 litres of adulterated milk was wasted in drains.

The formalin, the statement said, was found in the wasted milk which is a colourless solution of formaldehyde, used chiefly as a preservative for biological specimens. The existence of this chemical in milk was dangerous for child’s health.

Besides, the food authority also conducted raids on different shops, and food outlets where 2,500 kilogrammes of sweets and substandard oil were discarded, and some bakeries on the Warsak Road were sealed.
