GUJRAT: A team of Italian police has arrived in Pakistan to probe into the alleged ‘honour’ killing of Sana Cheema, an Italian woman of Pakistani origin, allegedly murdered by her father and brother.
Saddar Deputy Superintendent of Police Irfanul Haq Sulehria told Dawn that the Italian embassy in Islamabad had conveyed the local police about the arrival of a team of Italian police in Pakistan.
The Italian police team had also called on Gujranwala RPO Rifaat Mukhtar to discuss the case, he added.
The DSP said the RPO office had also issued directions to Gujrat police to work jointly with their Italian counterparts on the case.
The joint investigation could be launched within the next couple of days after the Italian team would arrive in Gujrat.
Meanwhile, police on Saturday produced the suspects in Ms Cheema’s murder case – her father Ghulam Mustafa Cheema and brother Adnan Cheema -- in the court of area magistrate after completion of their two-day physical remand.
The court granted their physical remand for two more days, handing the suspects over to the homicide unit of Saddar circle police until Monday (tomorrow). Th police had sought the remand to recover the piece of cloth allegedly used to strangle the deceased.
According to police sources, Adnan Cheema was being kept under strict watch as he was so distressed for “assisting his father in his sisters murder” that he might harm himself.
