GILGIT, May 23: The Gilgit Municipal Committee on Monday elected seven women for reserved seats. Eleven women contested the election, which had been postponed last month.

According to unofficial results, Albeena, Saima Latif, Kaneez Fatima, Aneesa Begum, Mehnaz Begum, Bulbul Nisa and Shafia were elected.

Officials said that the seats reserved for women in the local councils were filled in Ghizer, Skardu and Gangche districts last month but no woman had filed papers in Diamer.

They said arrangements would soon be made to hold election on women’s seats in the Astore district, which has been created recently.

WHEAT QUOTA: Members of the Northern Areas Legislative Council on Monday called upon the government to ensure equitable distribution of the wheat quota allocated for the region among its six districts.

They said the remote areas were not getting their quota due to inadequate arrangements made by the food department.

Some members argued that the allocation should be made on the basis of population.
