KARACHI, May 22: Top seed Aqeel Khan still reigned supreme after he beat second seed Asim Shafiq from Islamanad in an absolute thriller 7-5, 7-6 (7-4) in the final of the Greener Pakistan National Hard court tennis championship organised by Subh-e-Nau, before large band of tennis fans on Sunday at the Karachi Gymkhana.

In a tense first set, both players matched each other stroke for stroke until Asim dropped his service which enabled Aqeel to win the set 7-5.

In the next set it was Asim this time who broke Aqeel’s service and was leading 3-0.

But Aqeel fought his way back into contention drawing abreast 4-4, 5-5, 6-6 and finally winning the tiebreaker 7-4.

In the Juniors boys under-17 final, top seed Tanveer Ashiq from Lahore beat fifth seed Yasir Khan in another gruelling encounter.

Yasir, the younger brother of Aqeel, shocked the top seed pinching the first set 5-7.
