HARIPUR, May 21: A criminal case has been registered against 17 persons for opening fire at a police party last week in which four people, including an ASI, were injured, official sources said. On May 14, a police party headed by an ASI received information that some people from the Gandaf village had caught two persons, Haider Zaman and Shabir, red-handed when they were stealing spares of motorboats.

The police arrested the accused and when they were on their way to the Gandaf police post by a motorboat, some 17 persons chased them and opened fire with Kalashnikovs near the Lalo Gali stop, the sources said. ASI Abdul Razzaq, constables Abdul Quddus and Shahid Mehmood and the complainant, Pervez, were injured.

The attackers then got their handcuffed accomplices freed and escaped. A criminal case had been registered against 17 suspects but none had been arrested as yet.—Correspondent
