SANGHAR, May 20: Fixing of reflector stickers should be made mandatory for animal-driven carts plying on roads at night. At a meeting of the NGO-police network at the district council hall on Friday, participants said several accidents had occurred during the recent past in which donkey and bull carts were involved.

Allah Warayo Behan of the Dharti Dost Sangat said last month a man and his two sons were hit by a bus, killing the two boys on the spot.

He said the people in rural areas had once again reverted to use of non-machine carts because of rise in prices of petroleum and skyrocketing transport fares.

He said the donkey-carts had become most favourable mode of transportation in Sindh and they were being used as alternative of ambulances to shift patients and pregnant women to hospitals.

He said the donkey-carts now could be seen on the Motorways in the rural hinterland.

DSP Riaz Soomro said police had provided a large number of reflector papers to donkey-cart owners and fixed themselves on each donkey-cart when they enter towns and cities.

Mr Behan said donkey-carts were environment-friendly and if the prices of petroleum were increased, the people in rural areas would prefer to use donkey-carts for transportation.
