Zia beats Rashid in opener

KARACHI, May 16: The Toyota Camry Tennis Championship began on Monday evening under floodlights at the hard courts of the Karachi Gymkhana. Iqbal Umer, President of the Karachi Gymkhana performed the opening ceremony.

In the opener in the Executive class, Major Zia beat Rashid Ahmed 6-4, 6-3, former Davis Cupper M. Khalid from Lahore beat Syed Qutubuddin 6-4, 6-4, Jamil Ahmed, another former Davis Cupper beat Faisal Ahmed 6-4, 6-2 and Imran Ahmed beat Salman Rizvi.

Top seed Rashid Malik, the present non playing captain of the Pakistan Davis Cup team beat Asfandyar Minwalla 6-3, 6-2, while Inamul Haq, another former Davis Cup captain beat Col Eijaz from the Lahore Services Club 6-4, 6-3.

Second seed Hameedul Haq takes on Mehmood Hashmi on Wednesday at 5-30 p.m.

The Men’s doubles will commence from Tuesday May 17 at the Karachi Gymkhana tennis courts from 5-30 p.m.

Executive singles: Rashid Malik beat Asfandyar Minwilla 6-3, 6-2. Maor Zia beat Rashid Ahmed 6-4, 6-3. Inam ul Haq beat Col Eijaz 6-4, 6-3. M. Khalid beat Syed Qutubuddin 6-4, 6-4. Jamil Ahmed beat Faisal Ahmed 6-4, 6-2, Imran Ahmed beat Salman Rizvi 6-2, 6-1. Khawaja Masroor w/o Noor Zakaria.
