LAHORE: The Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) laid on Tuesday the foundation stone for the construction of 132kV Punjab University (PU) grid station and pledged to complete the project within a year.

Funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the grid station—a gas insulated substation (GIS)—will help the company minimise the consumer complaints related to low voltage, tripping, system overloading and fluctuation.

“I am sure the upcoming summer would be comfortable for the consumers as well as Lesco as no constraint will remain in the 132kV distribution system,” Lesco Chief Executive Officer Mujahid Pervaiz Chattha said while speaking at the project’s foundation stone laying ceremony.

The Rs450m PU GIS grid station would have power transformers of 20 and 26MVA capacity. The project would relieve Garden Town, Allama Iqbal Town, Johar Town and Model Town grid stations of additional burden, providing relief to hundreds of thousands of consumers.

“We are busy getting rid of the system constraints by upgrading the 66kV grid stations to 132kV, rehabilitation /upgrade of the existing and construction of new 132kV grid stations in Lahore and other service areas of Lesco. Hopefully, we will achieve all of our targets assigned by the ministry soon,” the Lesco CEO claimed.
