KARACHI: A seven-year-old leopardess — a favourite attraction at Karachi Zoo — died in mysterious circumstances last week.

Nobody at the Zoo knew anything about its death. The only information available was that the animal died in its cage in the dead of night. The gifted leopardess, according to information, was not suffering from any disease.

The leopardess — a large Asiatic quadruped with dark-spotted yellowish-fawn coat — was donated to Karachi Zoo by Messrs Rahat Woollen Mills, Rawalpindi, in 1962.

Since her childhood, the leopardess had developed a playful nature. She was very tame too. Since her death, the other leopardess appeared sad and depressed and hardly moved about. She was seen all by herself, mostly sleeping. Another leopardess at Karachi Zoo died last year. — Correspondent

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Dacca,] domestic work, parental neglect, poverty, lack of transport and ill-health were some of the reasons for the educational dropout in East Pakistan.

This was stated by Dr Manzur Ahmed, senior Director Institute of Education and Research, Dacca University, while presenting a paper on the vocational problem in the teachers training college premises here yesterday [Feb 12].
