KARACHI, May 9: Sprinter emerged victorious with 97 Victory Points (VP) in the Swiss Movement weekend duplicate bridge tournament at Aslam Memorial Bridge Hall on Sunday. Powered by stalwarts like Dr. Hashim, Azmatullah and the Norwegian pair of Olaf Johensen and Bjorn Glomsted, they won all the five matches of the day.

Having finished runners-up last week, Sprinter first defeated Mehmood IV 18-12 in their latest pursuit then Alliance 21-9, played a draw winning against Maq sharing 30 VPs equally, outpaced Four Bidders in the fourth round and won the all-important last match against Solox 21-9.

Solox played well till the last round. They collected 90 VPs to finish runners-up defeating newcomers Dada 25-5, then Maq 17-13, lost narrowly to Four Bidders 14-16, defeated Chandna 25-5 and lost to Sprinter 9-21. Gulzar Bilal, Raees Ahmed, Irfan Saadat, Anwer Kemal and Rashid Jafer made up Solox.

Four Bidders finished third with a total score of 85 VPs, winning three matches from Haider 25-5, Anis 22-8 and Solox 16-14. They lost the last two matches to Sprinter 8-22 and Maq 14-16.

Qamar Puri, S P Jamal, Shahab Saeed, Taqi Reza and Mushahid Siddiqui played well for Four Bidders. Earlier in the pair event, Rubina Hyee pairing with S M Hasnain outplayed other competitors from East-West direction by their excellent score of 59.60%.

Olaf Johnsen-Bjorn Glomsted finished runners-up with 59.17 percent followed by Hasan Sajjad-Zafar Zaki 54.29%.

From the other direction, Syed Ameer Hasan-Tariq Zafar won with 56.16% just a shade above Asghar Naqvi-Mehmood Naqvi 55.96% and Anwer Gheewala-Kumail Habib 54.34%.—APP
