HYDERABAD, May 9: A spokesman for the Hyderabad Development Authority has said drinking water being supplied to people is a little saltish but all hazardous elements have been removed and the water has been made safe as per WHO specifications. He said the provincial committee entrusted with the task of determining the quantum of water to be released from the Manchhar Lake into the River Indus had already ensured a ratio of 1:40 to neutralize the water.

He said the Water and Sanitation Agency, health and irrigation departments and various organizations were testing the water quality many times a day.

The spokesman said besides release of pure water to remove salts, hardness of the water was also being eliminated through modern technology at Wasa’s filter plant.

He said that at Hussainabad, Latifabad-4, Paretabad and Hala Naka water works, where chlorination facilities were not available, alum and bleaching powder was being used to eliminate pollutants.

He said Wasa was analysing the water quality through laboratory tests three times a day. He said according to the latest laboratory report, the electric conductivity of water was 327 while the safe limit prescribed by the WHO was 700.

He further said the WHO had prescribed the safe limit of TDS (total dissolved salts) at 500 but the TDS limit of water being supplied to people was only 210.

The spokesman observed that the water was safe for human consumption.
