THE RSF released a 34-strong list of what it called media freedom “predators”: leaders and organizations around the world it accuses of “direct responsibility for press freedom violations”.

The following is an excerpt from the list:

  • Bangladesh: Interior Minister Lutfozzaman Babor; Maoist party Purbobanglar

  • Cuba: President Fidel Castro

  • Iran: Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

  • Kazakhstan: President Nursultan Nazarbayev

  • Laos: President Khamtay Siphandone

  • Libya: Moamer Qadhafi

  • Maldives: President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom

  • Myanmar: Gen Than Shwe

  • Nepal: King Gyanendra; Maoist leader Comrade Prachanda

  • Nigeria: State Security Service

  • North Korea: Leader Kim Jong-Il

  • Pakistan: President Pervez Musharraf

  • Russia: President Vladimir Putin

  • Spain: Basque separatist group ETA

  • Syria: President Bashar al Assad

  • Tunisia: President Zine el Abidine ben Ali

  • Turkmenistan: President Saparmurat Niyazov

  • Uzbekistan: President Islam Karimov

  • Vietnam: Communist party leader Nong Duc Manh

  • Zimbabwe: President Robert Mugabe —AFP
