Wasif extends Nomi

KARACHI, Dec 14: Nomi Qamar defeated Wasif Cheema after a long and hard fought, three-set match lasting three hours, in the first round of men’s singles in the National Hard Court tennis championship at Karachi Gymkhana on Sunday according to a press release.

At the start of the third day, junior top seed Wasif earned three set points in the first set but failed to cash in on them and the set went to Nomi, men’s second seed.

The second set, which was characterized by long rallies mainly from the baseline was won by Wasif, while the third and the hardest fought encounter between the two was claimed by Nomi.

It took the winner more than three hours to clinch victory.

Men’s singles:(first round): Adnan Khan bt Usman Ejaz 6-2, 6-1; Nomi Qamar bt Wasif Cheema 7-6, 4-6, 6-4; Muhammad Shafiq bt Ali Hasan Bhagat 6-2, 6-3; Shahid Afridi bt Irfanullah 7-5, 6-4; Jalil Khan bt Tanveer Ashiq 6-3, 6-0; Kamran Khalil bt Khalid Ali Nazar 7-5, 6-3.

Men’s singles (qualifying): Munir Ashiq bt Ali Abdullah 8-3, Kamran Khalil bt Munir Ashiq 8-2, Amjad Nasir bt Abdul Shakoor 8-2, Wang Xiao Ping bt Suleman Aslam 8-3 and Amjad Nasir bt M Essa 8-1.
