SP, three family members gunned down in Quetta

Four people — a police officer and three members of his family — were killed and one passerby was injured in a gun attack in Quetta's Nawan Killi area Wednesday evening, DawnNews reported.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Abdul Razzaq Cheema told Dawn.com that armed men sprayed bullets on the vehicle of acting Superintendent of Police (SP) Muhammad Ilyas. The officer, his wife, son and granddaughter were killed in the attack.

One passerby was also injured in the attack. Rescue officials said the injured has been shifted to the trauma centre of the Civil Hospital in Quetta.

Cheema said the assailants sped away on their motorcycle after the attack. Police and personnel of Frontier Corps (FC) reached the spot soon after the attack and started investigating.

The police has recently been under attack in the provincial capital. A DIG and two others were killed in a blast in the city last week.

Fatal attacks on police officers in Balochistan gravely alarming and worrying. These incidents if not contained will not only demoralise the force, but will also other competent officers of police to serve in the province. Hence, the LEAs should devise a comprehensive plan to cope with this conundrum instantly before more damage is done.

Very sad hard to digest. These foreign funded operatives want to create an atmosphere of fear and helplessness amongst common people through these planned and meticulously executed target killings. We have to fight this menace differently by empowering members of local communities to act as ears and eyes of the law enforcement agencies and inform them of all suspicious activities happening in their neighborhood. No law enforcement can act efficiently unless they have precise and timely information regarding these murderers planning to kill, maim and disrupt lives of innocents at will.
