Chief of Army Staff Gen Qamar Jawed Bajwa discussed regional security with Iranian Ambassador Mehdi Honardoost in a meeting at General Headquarters on Tuesday, according to a statement issued by Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

According to the statement, the army chief and the ambassador also discussed border management and increasing interactions between the defence industries of the two countries.

While appreciating Pakistan's contributions towards peace in the region, the ambassador said that efforts to improve relations between Pakistan and Iran will continue, the statement said.

On Oct 15, during a meeting of the Pak-Iran Joint Border Commission held in Gwadar, Pakistan and Iran had vowed not to allow use of their soil for terrorist activities and had decided to improve the security situation at the border.

The two countries had also decided to take concrete steps to curb smuggling and illegal border crossing between the two countries.

In September, Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Iranian President Muhammad Hassan Rouhani had agreed to "maintain a trajectory of positive progress" between the two countries as they met on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

President Rouhani was said to have emphasised that the two countries should work together closely in deepening mutual cooperation in the areas of border management, trade and investment.
