Palestinians shut tunnels

Published August 25, 2003

Gaza Strip, Aug 24: Palestinian officials pressed on Sunday with their first crackdown on the supply of arms to fighters.

Israel dismissed the weekend closure of five arms-smuggling tunnels in Rafah town as mere “smoke and mirrors,” but appeared to hold off moving on the Gaza Strip after massing its tanks in the north.

The moves by the Palestinian Authority came with efforts stalled to implement a US-sponsored peace plan, and Israel and Palestinian hardliners rejecting efforts to revive a seven-week- old truce wrecked by new bloodshed.—AFP
