SANGHAR, Aug 21: The Sanghar District Council in a resolution adopted on Thursday demanded that Nazims of union, taluka and district councils should be included in relief and survey committees.

The council members, in another resolution, held the director of the Nara Canal system, Agha Aijaz Mughar, responsible for breaches in the canal and the Left Bank Outfall Drain and demanded his suspension.

The resolution which demanded that deduction of 1kg Phutty per 40kgs by ginners should be stopped was also passed by the council.

Gunang Bungalow Union Council Nazim Qasim Faqeer Mahar blamed the irrigation department for mismanaging the Nara Canal system.

He said after the rains irrigation authorities closed the Nara Canal which created water shortage in the area.

He alleged that the Chotiari Reservoir was not filled during monsoon deliberately.

Raja Shahid said billions of rupees were embezzled by LBOD officials who used substandard material in construction of the Chotiari Reservoir. He said the reservoir was not being filled to its capacity as its embankments were weak and could develop breaches.

ROAD BLOCKED: Fifty-four members of the Sanghar District Council blocked the Hyderabad Road and staged a sit-in in front of the council building here on Thursday to protest against cotton ginning factories.

During the council’s session, Raja Shahid and others said the members would hold a protest after the meeting against deduction of 1kg per 40kg Phutty, Rs6 as excise, octroi and other charges and Rs400 to Rs450 as ginning charges.

The protesters, including women councillors, were led by District Naib Nazim.

Speaking on the occasion, members Rana Shaukat, Raja Shahid, Mohammad Hassan Chandio and others said the government had declared Sanghar as a contamination-free cotton producing district and banned the use of jute and polypropylene bags.

They said growers used trolleys and open trucks for transporting Phutty but ginners were deducting 1kg and also levy other charges on one or the other pretext. They called for an end to the practice.
