PESHAWAR, Jan 5: NWFP Governor Syed Iftikhar Hussain Shah has said three major projects are being launched in Peshawar during the current  month and Rs112 million have been earmarked for the beautification of the city and widening of its roads.

Speaking at different meetings here at the governor’s house, he said a modern healthcare facility was being set up in the defunct municipal corporation’s building and the central jail would be demolished to establish a recreational facility at the site.

The district Nazim, the district Coordination officer and other officials attended the meetings.

The governor directed the officials to plan the future needs on the basis of data of vehicles plying on the roads in the city and take steps to keep the flow of traffic smooth. He directed them submit recommendations in this regard within 10 days.

He was told that the projects being started this month were, Soore Pull flyover at a cost of Rs50m, widening of Khyber Road at a cost of Rs70m and construction of Warsak flyover at Rs31 million.

He inquired about the progress on the Regi Lalma Housing Scheme.

The governor asked the authorities to involve the private sector in the beautification of roads and other projects.

He said the government would undertake some schemes but it would also ask the city government to launch development schemes from its share in the resources.

He said that encroachment would be removed and the extension of bus stand and construction  of terminal would be carried out while involving the stakeholders. If needed, additional land would be acquired for the bus stand, he said. He directed that expertise should be hired from the market for the schemes.

A meeting decided that the historical importance of Gore Gathary Tehsil would highlighted and the marriage hall there would be converted into a library.  Lawns and parks would be constructed in the Tehsil building. He said that cleanliness and an efficient traffic system were necessary in the Chowk Yadgar area.

The governor said that a health care facility was being established at the building of defunct municipal corporation, which would reduce the pressure on the tertiary health carte system.

He said that links would be established between the Caharsadda and university roads to reduce the traffic pressure  on the Khyber Road.

The governor said that a girls college had been approved for Peshawar.

He said the city government would have Rs112 million under the Khushal Pakistan Programme and the district governments should launch development activities.
