COLOMBO: Sri Lanka have failed to secure a direct qualification for the 2019 World Cup after losing four consecutive One-day Internationals to India.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) said after Thursday night’s fourth match that Sri Lanka, the 1996 World Cup champions, had needed two wins in the ongoing five-match ODI series against India to be sure of a World Cup spot. Tournament hosts England plus the top seven ranked teams as of Sept 30 qualify automatically for the quadrennial event.
Sri Lanka will now have to see how West Indies perform in a one-off ODI against Ireland and five ODIs against England.
As of now, the West Indies must lose at least one of those six ODIs for Sri Lanka to avoid having to enter a qualifying round for the World Cup.
The West Indies’ target will be slightly easier if Sri Lanka lose the series 5-0 to India. In that scenario, West Indies could go through ahead of Sri Lanka by beating Ireland and winning the England series 4-1.

Sri Lanka should have opted for playing against Pakistan, either in Pakistan or in Sri Lanka earlier, that way they would have easily crossed over the line for World Cup 2019.

Why can't ICC make qualifiers mandatory for every team just like FIFA? Holland might miss out because of France's big win. But they all play qualifiers be it Germany or Brazil. So maybe the same approach can be used in cricket too.

Pakistan, India and Bangladesh have much larger populations than Sri Lanka. So Sri Lanka has fewer player prospects to choose a national team from.

Both SL and WI should be in world cup.
As such cricket is a game with very few playing nation's.
Such disqualification will finish the public support , whatever remains.

Eventually, a great cricket team like Sri Lanka based on its professionalism, dedication, faith, mental toughness, unity, discipline and perseverance will be able to earn the distinction of playing in the upcoming 2019 Cricket World Cup to be held in England irrespective of how the West Indies perform in their 2017 ODI series against England in England.

The ICC rules are discouraging. there are very few cricketing nations. Cricket is not like Football/Soccer which is a universal global game and for the top class tournament you need filters for qualifying. I don't understand what ICC is trying. is there any hidden agenda?

Well WI needs to win 4-1 in England for SL to not automatically qualify. Even if that happens, which is unlikely, SL is sure to qualify when playing against Kenya, Ireland, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe.
Main thing is Bangladesh has started doing better, so now one of WI/SL will have to enter through qualifiers rather than direct entry.

Sri Lanka should have opted to play against Bangladesh or Ireland to avoid a pre qualifier. Bangladesh despite progress are a side that are simply not good enough to be in the top 8. They are only having a golden phase at this stage which will soon be over with its ageing players.
India - South Africa - England - Australia - New Zealand are the best sides in the world. (Open as anyone on their day can be unbeatable as all these sides are very balanced).
Pakistan Sri Lanka and West Indies (in that order) are the next sides. (Sorry Pakistan just missed out on top category as not consistent enough yet).
Afghanistan Zimbabwe Bangladesh and Ireland are the next group (Afghanistan top side in this group hands down).
