The meteorological department has forecast a heavy spell of rain to hit Karachi this week, although it ruled out the possibility of a heavy thunderstorm like the one that wreaked havoc in the city last week.

"We are expecting rain on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday," said chief meteorologist of the metropolis, Abdul Rasheed. He said it is also possible that the weather system bringing rain could approach Pakistan on Tuesday evening.

Rasheed predicted that the intensity of rain will be similar to the showers received by the metropolis a few days ago.

He, however, refuted the reports circulating on social media that a storm would hit Karachi in coming days. This was corroborated by the fact that the Met Department's website displayed no weather warnings on Monday.

"There is no [existing] storm and neither will a storm form [this week]."

The Met Department director said it was fortunate that the rain systems are moving towards the southern region this year, hence "Sindh has seen a good amount of rain".

At least 19 people were killed in Karachi last week due to electrocution, falling billboards and roof collapse incidents as a maximum of 41 millimetres of rainfall coupled with gusty winds wreaked havoc on the power supply system and municipal infrastructure.
