RAWALPINDI: The sanitary workers on Saturday staged a protest, seeking arrest of the killers of their two colleagues – one was killed in June and the other on Friday.

More than 300 sanitary workers, led by Municipal Workers League (CBA) Rawalpindi President Haji Farooq Ahmed Khan, gathered outside the Rawalpindi Press Club.

Asher Asif and Karamat Masih, employed with Turkish Al-Bayrak Waste Management Company, were gunned down on Murree Road and in Sadiqabad, respectively.

They urged the inspector general of police, Punjab, regional police officer and city police officer to help arrest the killers of their colleagues. They demanded security for the sanitary workers.

Addressing on the occasion, MWL (CBA) Rawalpindi President Haji Farooq Ahmed Khan denounced the armed attacks on sanitary workers and demanded adequate security for the workers.

He said: “The killing of two sanitary workers has created a sense of insecurity among the workers.”

He demanded that the government should do away with uniform for the sanitary workers as it had made them a soft target.

“The government should change the duty timings of the sanitary workers and call them on duty in daylight instead of early in the morning,” he said.

He said the Punjab government should compensate the families of the victims and give jobs to their sons.

He said all sanitary workers have decided to pay their one day salary to the widow of Karamat Masih, who became the latest target of terrorists on Data Ganj Baksh Road in Sadiqabad.
