KARACHI: An activist of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-London was killed in an alleged encounter in Korangi on Friday.

The Counter-Terrorism Department said that when some suspects were transporting weapons and ammunition, a CTD team intercepted them in the Bagh-i-Korangi area in the early hours of Friday.

CTD SSP Munir Ahmed Shaikh claimed that an encounter between the police and the suspects began and one suspect was arrested in a wounded condition while two of his accomplices fled.

The wounded man died while being taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Central, he said, adding that the deceased was identified as Javed Khaliq.

“The deceased belonged to the MQM’s London group,” claimed the officer. “He was in-charge of a target-killing team in the Landhi sector.”

He said that the deceased had remained in jail a number of times in several criminal cases.

“He was involved in more than 35 murders,” said the SSP. He used to collect extortion money from four markets of Landhi on a regular basis. He was also an absconder in murder cases.

A few days back, the CTD claimed to have killed another MQM-L man in Baldia Town in an alleged encounter.

Separately, the SSP said that they arrested three suspects linked with the MQM-London.

They were identified as Arshad Jameel, former in-charge of Landhi sector Taqi and Hanif.

The SSP said that Jameel was allegedly involved in three murder cases while other suspects were also involved in criminal activities.

The CTD also claimed to have recovered arms and ammunition from their custody.
